LIGHT AND WATER

The first images were taken in Munich. I visited the Alta Pinotek in deep appreciation of the Impressionist collection there. When I came out into the sunshine of a lovely autumn day, the light could not have been more exciting. With no breeze, the reflecting pool became both a lustrous mirror and a translucent window to the life on the bottom of the pond. At times, I found three layers of images: the reflection on the he water surface, the water and the growing algae on the bottom. The rivulets and ripples caused by the tier structure of the pond added another level of interest. The waterfalls had a dynamic of their own, too.

The color of the autumns leaves with their complementary contrast to the color of the water gave more cadences to the scene. I liked the definition of their shapes against the flow of the water as well.

Along a seashore water has so much energy. The water images came from a small cove in Northern California. It was a day in early spring and the rain water was rushing in self-created small rivers to the sea. The gushing water created enough energy to generate bubbles. The light varied from the ambiance of gray morning to the breaking of sun through the clouds.

Water fascinates me. It is so mutable. Even though we may contain the moment, we don’t really contain the water. It has another shape, maybe another form, another color; all this accomplished within seconds. The surface experiences of reflection or translucence, or refraction where it changes the speed of light, the conceptual notions of its importance in daily life, our own connection with the ocean because of the red sea in our bodies; we deal with it constantly.

I love it when water is so clear that peering through it shows you another world. It’s a magic looking glass.
